The Mesa J Mine Access Road Upgrade Phase 2 project for RTIO in Pannawonica involved extensive road widening and upgrades to the existing access road to the Mesa J mine site, all while ensuring continuous operation for mine traffic. The scope of works included construction and quality management throughout the project duration, earthworks such as soil testing, site clearing, foundation preparation, embankment fill, subbase and base course installation to integrate with the existing road. Additionally, the project included applying a Two Coat Seal to RTIO specifications, installing line markings, road signage, and constructing an asphalt intersection to MRWA specifications. Extension of existing drainage culverts across four separable portions was also undertaken.
Highlights of the project included achieving zero lost time injuries or first aid incidents throughout the project duration. The project encompassed significant site clearing, including variations to clear the entire area up to the mine site, totaling 86 hectares. Twelve culverts were extended with rock treatments to facilitate road widening, ranging from 300mm to 900mm. Additional achievements included preparing 78,500 square metres of foundation, importing, conditioning, and compacting 12,000 tonnes of roadbase, trimming 17,000 square metres of base, and 70,050 square metres of batters. The project also involved applying 26,516.50 square metres of first coat seal and 47,786 square metres of second coat seal, along with installing 48,625 linear metres of line marking to both new and existing roads leading to the mine entry. Despite encountering design challenges and processing over 20 variations that required additional works, the project was completed within the initially agreed extension of time (EOT).
